Copy-editing
Following my initial assessment, I will advise you on the level of editing which I believe is required; if you are uncertain about the way I would like to proceed, I am happy to discuss your concerns until we reach an agreement with which we are both satisfied and which will set out the brief for me to follow. Below is a brief outline of the two levels of editing I offer.
– Structural copy-editing: this is the most involved level of editing and it involves tackling the book’s structure, discrepancies in the plot, the choice of characters’ traits and also rewriting chunks of texts (are you stuck on a particularly difficult passage of your book or looking for a way out of a narrative dead-end?). Most often the solution to these problems is having a new pair of eyes look over the text.
– Basic copy-editing: this ensures that all language and consistency mistakes are picked up and resolved so that the text is ready for the next phase in the publishing process. Additionally, I will put together a list of queries and comments (Notes) in order to draw your attention to problems I have spotted in the text which are normally tackled in a structural copy-editing. This should provide you with some food for thought and I am always available to advise you on ways to resolve these issues.
Moreover, I create a House Style from scratch and ensure this is applied throughout the manuscript so that it will be easier for the publisher (if one has been selected) to adapt it to its rules. Alternatively, should you choose to self-publish, this document will make your book stand out as a more professional volume that won’t be littered with inconsistencies.
